Danger Islands Misson - November 2025
In November 2025, the Malizia Explorer embarked on her first mission to Antarctica together with researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute, ThINK Jena and the German Environmental Agency. The aim of this mission was to perform the first detailed study of the Danger Islands and gather evidence to make a case that protection could and should be expanded from land to sea.
Baltic Sea Mission - GEOMAR - July 2026
In July of 2026, several research expeditions led by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel set sail in the Baltic Sea aboard the Malizia Explorer. The missions focussed on seagrass ecosystems and phytoplankton, two key components of the Baltic marine environment.
Greenland Mega Mission - September 2026
For the month of September 2026, a team of researchers made up of climate modelers and oceanographers as well as marine biologists and marine acoustic experts came onboard the Malizia Explorer to study the both the soundscape of the Kangertittivaq fjord system in Greenland as well as how incoming Atlantic Water spreads through the fjord systems.
Global Warning - January-March 2026
From January 2025 to March 2026, Malizia Explorer joined forces with Under The Pole, pioneers in deep-sea diving and scientific exploration, for an ambitious mission into the largely unexplored waters of Antarctica. Together, the teams supported the DEEPLIFE 2021-2030 programme, developed in partnership with the CNRS to study marine animal forests in the mesophotic zone, down to around 100 metres, and advance our understanding of these fragile ecosystems.
OKEANOS - Kelp Can! - august 2026
In August 2026, Malizia Explorer welcomed ten young ocean changemakers from Waves of Action, the youth initiative of the Okeanos Foundation for the Sea, for a 20-day voyage north from Kiel to Bodø, Norway. Together, they explored one of the ocean’s most important coastal ecosystems: kelp forests.
