Sailing home through a solar storm

After 20 days at sea, exploring the frozen silence of Scoresby Fjord, the Malizia Explorer heads off for the journey south. With research sampling coming to a close, we say goodbye to the immaculate wilderness of Greenland and set sail toward Akureyri, Iceland.

What begins as a tense weather window resolves into a smooth, downwind run of 20 to 25 knots. Below deck, the crew processes data and rests after weeks on the move. On our final night at sea, the sky lights up into an incredible solar storm: a vivid display of Northern Lights dancing right above the masts. After so many days without touching solid ground, stepping ashore in Iceland brings both a strange, humbling feeling of weakness and deep gratitude for an extraordinary mission.
