Fewer than 1000 people visit Scoresby Sund each year. Yet this remote fjord system in East Greenland, the largest fjord system in the world, holds knowledge that can help us understand changes happening far beyond Greenland…so we want you to come onboard to join us during our live streamed “Classroom From The Fjord”!
The Malizia Explorer is currently in Greenland with scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) onboard. Together, they are researching Greenland’s fjords and studying whales, ocean currents and melting glaciers. To bring the science and importance of this distant region to schools and children around the world, the My Ocean Challenge education programme is inviting students to join for a live “Classroom from the Fjord”. From onboard the sailing research and outreach vessel Malizia Explorer, you will learn about the research being carried out in this remote part of the Arctic and discover what a Greenlandic fjord can tell us about our changing planet and its future.
You will also get a glimpse into life onboard: What is it like to work and live on a boat in such a remote environment? How do you navigate and captain a vessel in the Arctic? And what does a day look like for the scientists and crew onboard?
The live session is aimed primarily at students aged 8-14, but everyone interested in the Arctic and our Ocean is welcome to join. The 45-minute session will be hosted on Zoom in a fun and interactive format, with plenty of opportunities for students to ask questions at the end.

What is the My Ocean Challenge?
The My Ocean Challenge is Team Malizia’s education programme, inspiring children and young people to learn about the ocean and become ocean changemakers. Since its foundation, the programme has reached more than 135 000 children worldwide through live classrooms from onboard Team Malizia’s racing yachts and the Malizia Explorer’s research expeditions and through its free educational materials, including an education booklet available in 11 languages, which can be used at home or in schools to make learning about the ocean fun and accessible.
