Where the Ocean Connects Us: Returning from Antarctica

The team take shelter from a storm in Paradise Bay, a place that feels aptly named for the environment they are within. Forced to pause until the storm passes and the journey home can begin, they watch, listen, and learn from nature in its quiet and sometimes loud normality and inherent balance. Soon after, carrying these impressions with them, the crew turns north.

As the first half of the Global Warning mission comes to an end, we follow the crew onboard the Malizia Explorer as they leave Antarctica behind and sail back to port in Ushuaia, Argentina.

On the long journey home, through the extreme conditions of the Drake Passage, reflection begins  on what was witnessed, what these experiences mean, and what is so deeply worth protecting. Strangers only weeks ago, the crew became connected through a shared love for the Ocean, for this remote region, and for the lives it holds and sustains. Distance and closeness blur, and kinship forms, much like in the nature that surrounds them.

After 22 days at sea, spent getting to know a world of immense ecological importance vast, pristine, and distant, yet profoundly connected to all life on planet Earth words continue to fall short, however, crystal clear remains the conviction towards protection.
